Following the official announcement, Smith tweeted about how grateful and excited he was for the opportunity to join the ranks of musicians who’ve lent their talents to James Bond theme songs.

“This is one of the highlights of my career,” Smith wrote. “I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations.”

Spectre producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli released a statement touting Smith’s talents, as well as that of Jimmy Naples, who co-wrote the theme song with the British singer.

“Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, Writing’s On The Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time,” Wilson and Broccoli said in their statement.

Smith’s “Writing’s On the Wall” is following the wildly successful Skyfall theme song sung by Adele. “Skyfall” not only won a Grammy, but a Golden Globe and an Oscar as well. Throughout the James Bond franchise, theme songs have been sung by the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Carly Simon, Jack White and Alicia Keys.

Spectre, directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, hits theaters Nov. 6.
