Salman Rushdie is continuing his recovery after he was stabbed at a speech at the Chautauqua Institution in New York this summer.
An update on his status was provided by his agent Andrew Wylie, who was speaking with the Spanish newspaper El País.
It had mostly been radio silence since Wylie texted “the long road to recovery has begun,” to The New York Times back in August directly after Rushdie’s stabbing.
Wylie went on to explain Rushdie’s lingering injuries he’ll be dealing with for the rest of his life in this new interview.
“He’s lost the sight of one,” Wylie first noted. “He had three serious wounds in his neck. One hand is incapacitated because the nerves in his arm were cut. And he has about 15 more wounds in his chest and torso,” the agent also explained.
Rushdie has been the subject of a Muslim fatwa, or a religious edict ordering his assassination, for over 30 years because of his controversial fourth novel The Satanic Verses.
He spent nine years in hiding with the assistance of the British authorities.
The attacker was arrested at the scene and is being held without bail in Western New York. He is a 24-year-old New Jersey resident Hadi Mater.
Iran has denied involvement in the attack. The country’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said, “We consider no one except [Rushdie] and his supporters deserving of blame or even condemnation,” for the author’s stabbing.
Mater has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree along with second degree assault, and has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Wylie was tight-lipped about whether Rushdie is still in the hospital for his injuries or if he has been discharged, but that may be an appropriate thing to leave obscured for the author’s safety.
uInterview reached out to Wylie for a comment on the unfolding situation.
