The Screen Actors Guild held its 25th annual awards show on Sunday, honoring a number of actors who are now one step closer to Oscar gold. Throughout its two and a half decade run, the SAG awards has proven to be a unique predictor of Hollywood’s biggest night, with 20 lead actors and 18 lead actresses having won both the SAG and the Oscar. And that means that Oscar-favorites Glen Close and Rami Malek, who won lead actor awards for The Wife and Bohemian Rhapsody, respectively, are now inches away from tasting victory on February 24.
Hosted by Megan Mullally, who follows Kristen Bell as the second-ever SAG-awards host, the show’s broadcast was lighthearted, decently funny, and sometimes shocking. Although shoe-ins like Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) took home the television lead-actor trophies, other frontrunners were shut out completely. Although nominated four times, Bradley Cooper‘s A Star Is Born left empty-handed, as did triple nominees BlaKkKlansman and The Favourite. Oscar frontrunner Roma was shut out from the nominations entirely.
In other surprising turns, Emily Blunt took home the supporting actress award for her work in The Quiet Place, beating out favorite Amy Adams (Vice) and both women of The Favourite. The cast of Black Panther took home the night’s top prize, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and This Is Us took home the ensemble trophy for a television drama for the second year in a row.
M.A.S.H’s Alan Alda was honored with the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, introduced by the ever-lovely Tom Hanks. The night featured a wide variety of presenters, despite previous reports that the Academy has been pressuring its members to attend only their awards ceremony.
