A woman was caught stealing nearly $2,500 worth of Stanley cups this week in Sacramento, California.
The woman reportedly filled her shopping cart with Stanley Quenchers and left without paying. Police ultimately found her and arrested her. The woman was charged with grand theft and driving under the influence.
The arrest comes amid the recent Stanley Cup craze. The company that produces the in-demand cups has been in business for more than 100 years. Stanley Cups were originally designed to keep food or beverages hot or cold. After a 2020 brand revamp with women as the primary consumer base, the company used influencers to advertise its product. Their strategy worked after the cups took off on social media. Some cups can sell now for over $200 apiece.
The special edition Valentine’s Day cups are selling out, with some resellers offering hundreds of dollars more than its $20-$50 stock price.
Saturday Night Live even mocked the craze this weekend with a sketch titled, “Big Dumb Cups.”
