Ryan Reynolds’ new comedy film, Free Guy, has several well-known cameos, including former Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.

Shortly after Trebek’s death, the Deadpool actor revealed that Trebek shot his cameo for the film while he was battling cancer in 2019.

“Alex Trebek was kind enough to film a cameo for our film Free Guy last year despite his battle. He was gracious and funny. In addition to being curious, stalwart, generous, reassuring and of course, Canadian. We love you, Alex. And always will,” he tweeted.

Trebek and Reynolds are both from Canada and filmed an episode of Jeopardy before his death. The episode aired in January; Reynolds commemorated Trebek on Twitter, writing, “It’s an honor (and a little heartbreaking) to be with #AlexTrebek one last time on @Jeopardy.”

Reynolds made a guest appearance on the Jeopardy episode to deliver a clue under the “Movies” category.

“In my 2020 movie Free Guy, I play a bank teller who comes to realize that he’s really an NPC, short for this kind of character in an open world video game?” Reynolds asked the contestants in a video message during the show. The answer was “non-player character.”

Reynolds later recalled his meeting with Trebek during an interview with E! News earlier this month.

“We shot that [cameo] separately, actually after the film had been completely done and dusted and completed. Alex was kind enough to jump in and do this little cameo for us. I was just so blown away by how sweet he was to do that,” said Reynolds.

“Even right up shortly before he passed away, I talked to him on the phone about a charity initiative he was trying to launch This guy was really made of good stuff right until the end. Having him in the movie is certainly bittersweet, that’s for sure.,” he added.

Free Guy premieres in theaters on August 13 after being delayed from its July 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
