Ruth Bader Ginsburg To Have New Species of Praying Mantis Named After Her

A new species of praying mantis will be named Ruth Bader Ginsburg in honor of the Supreme Court Justice’s relentless fight to achieve gender equality.

The new species of mantis, Ilomantis ginsburgae, was discovered by a brand-new technique using the genitals of female praying mantises as a way to distinguish species, according to The Washington Post.

“Female specimens weren’t used to diagnose most species,” said Sydney Brannoch, a Case Western Reserve University PhD candidate, in a statement.

Researchers, who announced the naming decision on Wednesday, noted that Ginsburg, 83, is known for her judge’s neckwear, called a jabot, that resembles the new species’ neck plate.

Ginsburg is only the second woman to serve on the court.
