A major plot point was finally revealed on Sunday’s episode of Once Upon a Time.
Viewers were convinced last year that they would be meeting Rumplestiltskin’s mother when a new Irish character was cast; however, it was only a clever way of introducing Merida (Amy Manson).
Flashbacks in the latest episode showed Belle (Emile de Ravin) being forced to watch after a baby that Rumple (Robert Carlyle) had stolen with the purpose of luring in the Black Fairy (Jaime Murray), who also steals children. In doing so, we find out that the Black Fairy is Rumple’s mother. She abandoned him as a child, and he was eager to ask her why.
“Sometimes you have to choose power over love,” she told him, before disappearing.
This reveal offers more to the complexity of Rumple’s character, and why he himself turned to his more evil side. In fact, his father also deserted him to become Peter Pan. And now Belle has enlisted the Blue Fairy to take her child far away so that Rumple could not affect his destiny, and so Rumple has essentially lost yet another son.
