German Shepherd Rumor won big at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show Monday night.
Rumor just missed the top prize last year at Madison Square Garden. She was the No. 1 choice in the nation going into the final show, but fell short to a shorthaired pointer named CJ. It was thought that Rumor would retire, but she came back in full swing this year, winning first in the herding group.
The 5-year-old pup added another to her previous 103 career championship ribbons. “I have no idea, you never know,” said co-owner Kent Boyles. “Really good competition,” he added, saying he was “pretty nervous.”
The Westminster Kennel Club competition sees nearly 2,800 dogs and 202 breeds and varieties. The final winner will be announced Tuesday evening.
Among other winners were Duffy the elkhound, who won the hound group over 32 other hound breeds. A 1-year-old pekingese named Chuckie won the toy dog group. He is the 26th pekingese to win the group in the history of the show. The winners of the seven groups will compete for Best in Show.
