Rudy Giuliani Avoids Jail Time For Unpaid Divorce Settlement For Ex-Wife Judith Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani avoided jail time on Monday after beating a contempt order in an ongoing dispute with his ex-wife over money owed according to a divorce settlement reached three years ago.

Judge Michael Katz issued the contempt order in September after Giuliani failed to appear at a court proceeding. At that time, his ex-wife, Judith Giuliani said her ex-husband and former mayor owed her more than $260,000. Shortly thereafter, Judge Katz warned Giuliani, saying he could be jailed at a moment’s notice for not paying up.

Since then, Giuliani has provided copies of checks amounting to $150,000 paid to Judith. He said there was another payment of $45,000 in September.

“It seems to me that he’s shown proof of payment,” Katz said on Monday. “I am going to direct that he makes those payments and to remain current with any other obligations under the stipulation.”

The couple allegedly bickered throughout the court appearance, leaving the judge less than amused and unwilling “to be an accountant” for the couple much longer.

Giuliani’s personal life unraveling in a courtroom has been accompanied by a similar professional undoing.

Earlier this month Giuliani appeared in attorney disciplinary proceedings in Washington D.C. to defend his efforts to overturn the 2020 election on behalf of ex-president Donald Trump.

In 2020, Giuliani signed onto a lawsuit challenging Trump’s election loss in Pennsylvania. The D.C. proceedings sought to uncover whether doing so violated attorney ethics rules.

The committee has yet to release an official report with its recommendations.

Giuliani has also been the target of criminal investigations as it relates to his possible interference with the 2020 election in Georgia. He later spoke at the January 6 rally making unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud and calling for “trial by combat.”
