Royal baby update: Kate Middleton has given birth to a baby boy, the first child for her and her royal husband Prince William.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at St. Mary’s Hospital early Monday morning and went in through a side entrance. Press had been camped outside the hospital’s Lindo Wing for weeks, as her due date was speculated to be somewhere in the middle of July.
The royal baby, born at 4:24 pm local time, weighed 8.6 pounds. The name, as expected, was not revealed in the initial announcement. What was a surprise, however, was the decision to forgo making the initial announcement with the Buckingham Palace letterhead on the easel. Since it was getting dark by the time they were ready to share the news, it was decided it would be best to send out an electronic press release first. Queen Elizabeth II received the happy news via an encrypted call from William from the hospital.
Upon learning the news, William’s father, Charles, Prince of Wales released a statement. “Both my wife [Camilla] and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild,” it read. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.”
Kate’s pregnancy was revealed in December 2012 after she had been admitted to the hospital for an acute form of morning sickness, following months of speculation that she was with child. The royal couple was married on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey. Their son is the first royal heir to be born since William’s birth in 1982. It’s rumored that the child, destined to be the king of England, will be named either George or James.
