Joey + Rory were nominated for a Grammy Award – but Rory Feek refused to leave the side of his ailing wife Joey Feek in order to attend the ceremony.
Rory took to his blog This Life I Live to joyfully reveal that Joey’s terminal cancer had not taken her before she could watch the 2016 Grammy Awards, where they were nominated for Best Country Duo/Group performance for “If I Needed You.”
“Fortunately, Joey has made it this far to be able to watch the show,” Rory wrote, explaining that his daughters Heidi and Hope would be going in their place despite Joey’s insistence that he attend. “Joey tried to talk me into going with them… many, many times.”
“She even had a Southwest ticket purchased for me that I canceled. I can’t leave her. I won’t,” Rory explained. “I have done many foolish things and made lots of mistakes in my life, but this isn’t going to be one of them.”
“Instead, I will be sitting beside [Joey] and cheering on Little Big Town, and Blake Shelton and Charles and all the talented folks who are nominated in our category and others,” Rory went on. “It’s an honor for us to just be a part of that night, it truly is.”
In the end, Joey + Rory lost to Little Big Town for their hit single “Girl Crush.”
Joey has been battling cervical cancer since May 2014. In the months following the diagnosis, she underwent a hysterectomy and has received chemotherapy and radiation treatments. After doctors determined that the cancer had spread and that she only had months to live, Joey entered hospice care at her childhood home in Indiana.
