Hip-hop icons The Roots announced their upcoming Roots Picnic, to be held on Saturday, June 3 in Philadelphia’s Festival Pier. This is the 10th installment of their annual music festival, which has driven local and national crowds to hear the best and brightest of hip-hop artists.
Now, the hip-hop band has announced their lineup for this year’s picnic. The Roots will perform a co-headlining set with Pharrell. The eclectic lineup will also include Lil Wayne, Solange, 21 Savage, Kimbra and Gilles Peterson.
“Ten years ago this started as a concept, an idea, a conversation between me, Tarik (Black Thought), Ahmir (Questlove) and Rich (Nichols),” said Shawn Gee, Roots manager and partner in Maverick Management. “It’s amazing that it has grown into such a valued piece of the cultural landscape of our hometown of Philadelphia. We were blessed to expand the Picnic to NYC last year, and the brand will continue to grow and evolve, but Philly will ALWAYS be the home, the birthplace of the Roots Picnic. We are super excited to bring a packed lineup to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and as always there will be plenty of surprises and special guests.”
“This definitely speaks to the staying power of The Roots and the uniqueness of the picnic as a good festival,” says Roots cofounder Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter. “Not many music festivals last, have a 10-year run, or hold such validity and stay consistently good and getting better.”
Their past music festivals have included artists such as Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy, and Usher, who got the rare opportunity to team with one of America’s most dynamic bands: The Roots.
Tickets for Roots Picnic ’17 are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
