Just a day after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed former President Donald Trump, he declared that he would veto a bill in the state legislature that would have Florida taxpayers foot the bill for his legal costs.
DeSantis promised to veto a bill from Republican state Sen. Ileana Garcia, which would authorize spending $5 million from Florida’s state budget to cover Trump’s legal costs.
He shared a link to his social media to a Politico article titled, “Some Florida Republicans want taxpayers to pay Trump’s legal bills,” to which he responded, “But not the Florida Republican who wields the veto pen.”
Despite this, DeSantis has still endorsed Trump. “It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” he said in his withdrawal video. “He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.”
The news surfaced hours before the New Hampshire primary, where Trump defeated Haley, the sole remaining Republican in the race. The GOP frontrunner is facing criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election and retaining government secrets after he left office.
