Roger Goodell Enlists Former FBI Director Robert Mueller To Conduct Investigation On NFL's Handling Of Ray Rice

Robert Mueller, former FBI Director, will he heading an independent investigation into the NFL’s handling of Ray Rice and his domestic violence arrest in light of the newly released video documenting the elevator assault.

Reports Suggest NFL Had Access To The Tape

On Monday, TMZ Sports released surveillance video showing Rice, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, punching his then-fiancé Janay Rice – now his wife – and then dragging her out of the elevator unconscious. Rice, who was originally punished with a 2-game suspension from the NFL, was quickly cut from the Baltimore Ravens and was suspended from the NFL indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The incident occurred in February, and the original surveillance video of the assault that was made public only showed Rice dragging his unconscious fiancée out of a casino elevator. Since the release of the second video, Goodell and the NFL have insisted that they were never provided access to the video, though they had requested it multiple times. However, sources disputed those claims, saying that law enforcement had, in fact, sent over a copy of the footage to the NFL in April, before they decided on Rice’s 2-game suspension. Once more, the NFL denied receiving any such video.

“We have no knowledge of this. We are not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday. We will look into it,” insisted NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.

Robert Mueller To Conduct Investigation Into NFL

Wednesday night, Goodell enlisted Robert Mueller to conduct an investigation into the NFL’s “pursuit and handling of evidence in the Ray Rice domestic violence incident.” Giants co-owner John Mara and the Steelers’ Art Rooney II will also be involved in the investigation.

No doubt Goodell is hoping to appease those calling for his resignation – “#GoddellMustGo” has been a trending topic on Twitter since Monday.
