The Rockettes have been kicking it since their debut show on December 21, 1933. The 86-year-old dance group was originally inspired by the British dance troupe “The Tiller Girls,” which was formed by John Tiller and rose to fame in 1922. In its early inception the dancers were not known as the Rockettes, but were named the “Missouri Rockets.” Their first show ever was in St. Louis, Missouri and then they traveled to New York City to perform on Broadway where they became an instant hit. “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and “Living Nativity” remain to be the show’s most popular dance numbers today and have changed very little over the years.
The dance troupe has proved itself to be so popular that millions of people have seen the show. The show has become a special family tradition, in which more than 75 million people have gone to see the Rockettes show off their skills.
Originally, the Christmas Spectacular was only 30-minutes long, but today the show is a 90-minute Christmas celebration. Over 3,000 women have performed as Rockettes since its opening night in 1933. Every season there are a total of 80 Rockettes. However, they are broken up into two casts, consisting of 40 dancers each, and only 36 perform onstage at a time.
