With the ousting of Kevin Spacey amid sexual assault allegations, the sixth and final season of House of Cards will star Robin Wright as the main character.
Netflix announced Wright would take over the lead role on Monday. The finale season will contain just eight episodes and will not include shamed actor Spacey. “We’re really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, at a conference on Monday. “We’re excited for the 370 people who make House of Cards and have done the best work of their lives on that show; for the 2,000 people in Baltimore who have come to depend on that show for their jobs. And so we’re really excited that we were able to come to a good creative conclusion to the show.”
The announcement resolves the uncertainty surrounding the hit Netflix show as to how it would continue sans Spacey. The choice to place Wright in the lead role makes sense to her character and plot line as well, as Claire Underwood became president at the end of season five, following her husband Frank Underwood’s resignation from office.
Production had been suspected on the show after Netflix declared it would cut ties to any productions involving Spacey after Anthony Rapp came forward with his assault allegation against the actor in October. The announcement on Monday also declared that production would resume in 2018.
