Robin Williams' death was likely a result of “asphyxiation due to hanging,” according to the Marin County Coroner’s Office.
Lt. Kevin Boyd, the Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner of Marin County, held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to provide details on the death of Williams, 63. According to Boyd, “The preliminary examination supports that physical signs of life ended from asphyxiation due to hanging.”
Williams’ personal assistant discovered the actor’s body after becoming concerned when he failed to answer repeated knocks at his bedroom door at about 11:45 p.m. local time on Monday. The assistant found the actor slightly suspended from the floor in a seated position with a belt tied around his neck and wedged between a door and the door's frame. Responding to a 911 call, firefighters arrived at the scene and pronounced Williams dead at 12:02 p.m.
In addition to the apparent suicide by hanging, investigators discovered a pocket blade on the floor of the room in which Williams was found and “several acute superficial transverse cuts” on the inside of his left wrist.
Toxicology results will be conducted on the actor, who endured a lengthy battle with drug and alcohol addiction, and will be available within two to six weeks.
Although it has been confirmed that Williams suffered from severe depression, for which he was seeking treatment, Boyd deferred commenting on whether or not those close to Williams had feared he would take his own life or whether or not the actor had left a suicide note.
Since news of Williams' death broke Monday afternoon, close friends and family, fellow comedians and actors, and fans – including President Barack Obama – have expressed their grief in the loss of the beloved entertainer.
