Robin Thicke debuted his latest single “Give It 2 U” on Monday, following his risqué performance of “Blurred Lines” with Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
The music video released for “Give It 2 U” actually makes Thicke and Miley’s racy dancing on the VMA stage make more sense. In it, the 36-year-old singer sits on a college football field as scantily clad women gyrate around him wielding foam fingers – Miley’s favorite prop of Sunday evening. The dance groups trotting out onto the field are actually members of collegiate dance teams – one of which appears to specialize in twerking.
Also, that Beetlejuice getup Thicke was wearing at the VMAs? In the context of the video, it’s obviously a play on a referee uniform.
Many, perhaps most notably the Parents Television Council, felt a former Disney star’s participation in the tasteless performance was an outrage on MTV's awards show. Surely, they’d find it equally outrageous that Thicke and Paula Patton’s 3-year-old son Julian makes a cameo in the less-than kid friendly “Give It 2 U” video.
Complementing Thicke’s naturally soulful voice on the track are rappers 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar.
