Robin Thicke admitted in a deposition video that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol during every press interview he did last year.
Thicke, 38, had to submit to a deposition for the lawsuit that alleges he failed to give credit to Margin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” for his hit track “Blurred Lines.” Since Thicke’s interviews that touched on “Blurred Lines” and its inspiration were used as evidence, the singer was asked to weigh in on them.
“I didn’t do a single interview last year without being high on both [alcohol and Vicodin],” Thicke said in the deposition tape. “With all due respect, I was high and drunk every time I did an interview last year.”
“When I give interviews, I tell whatever I want to say to help sell records,” Thicke continued before answering in the negative when asked if he considered himself to be an honest person.
In addition to Thicke, producer Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. are also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
In Williams’ deposition, he repeatedly said he was “uncomfortbale” with the line of questioning. He also declared to the attorney that it wasn’t his job to teach him music, and didn’t appreciate the suggestion that he can’t read music.
“I did not go in the studio with the intention of making anything feel like, or to sound like, Marvin Gaye,” Williams maintained.
Marvin Gaye’s family, which had sought $25 million in damages for the alleged ripoff, were ultimately awarded more than $7 million for infringing copyright. Williams, Thicke and T.I. have sought out an appeal.
