Robin Roberts, the beloved Good Morning America anchor, came out Dec. 29 in a Facebook post in which she thanked her partner, Amber Laign.

Roberts, who has never openly addressed her sexuality, took to Facebook to reflect on her year and express her gratitude to her friends and family who helped her through her battle with breast cancer in 2008 and her bone marrow transplant in 2012.

In her post, Roberts encourages her fans to express what they are grateful for in the year 2013 and discreetly acknowledges her sexuality in the post by thanking her girlfriend, writing, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”

According to an ABC spokesperson, Roberts and Laign have been seeing each other for 10 years after meeting through mutual friends. Laign is a San Francisco based massage therapist. Though the Roberts’ relationship with Laign may come as a surprise to fans, it is certainly not news to those close to the news anchor.

“Love Robin and Amber, and have known Amber a long time. We were all touched by Robin’s FB message today, so glad she has so much incredible support in her life,” Senior Vice President of ABC News, Jeffrey Schneider, told E! News.

Celebrities Support Roberts

While Roberts’ sexual orientation was no secret from her friends and family, stars have come out to publicly support Roberts after her coming out, including First Lady Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGeneres.

Roberts has also received support from GLAAD spokesperson and actor Wilson Cruz, who issued a statement praising Roberts’ decision:

“Robin’s courage continues to be unwavering, and today she has inspired countless young LGBT people and, in particular, LGBT people of color – especially LGBT women of color – who can now see a reflection of themselves on America’s most-watched morning show. As one of the nation’s most-trusted journalists, as well as a top athlete, Robin is also helping millions of viewers to better understand the rich diversity of the LGBT community.”

Roberts has not released further comment on her coming out, and she is currently on vacation from her Good Morning America duties. Whether or not she will comment on her announcement is unknown.
