Local authorities announced that Gideon McKean, Robert F. Kennedy‘s great-grandson, died by drowning – the official cause of death.
The accident also involved his mother, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, whose remains were found 2,000 feet away from him.
The report was released on April 13, by the Maryland Dept. of Health, which has been in charge of the case.
Gideon, 8, went missing with his mom on April 2 after they reportedly jumped in a canoe to get a ball that had fallen into the Chesapeake Bay. It is believed that they got pushed out to sea by wind or tide when they got into a canoe.
