Robert Durst, New York real estate heir millionaire, pled guilty on Wednesday in a New Orleans federal court on charges of possessing a .38 caliber revolver. After agreeing to a plea bargain, he will serve 85 months in federal prison.
Durst is a convicted felon which means possession of any type of firearm is illegal. The revolver was found after the FBI arrested the millionaire in a New Orleans hotel where he was staying under an alias back in March 2015. He was found with $44,000 in cash with an additional $117,000 being delivered to him. Authorities believed he was planning to escape to Cuba. Durst will also be transported to Los Angeles where he will be charged with the murder of former friend, Susan Berman.
Durst first got himself in hot water in 1982 when his wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst, disappeared after an argument the two had. Durst claimed he dropped her off the train station but her family suspects foul play. The family came after him with a $100 million lawsuit, but Durst’s lawyer said the window to sue had been closed.
Shortly after he was arrested on the gun charge, an HBO special called The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst aired its last episode. In that last episode, Durst appeared to confess to killing the women when he was confronted with a letter he wrote that matched the handwriting police found at Berman’s crime scene. Durst entered a bathroom and without realizing he had his microphone still on, said, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
