English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams has come forward with the shocking revelation about being diagnosed with scurvy.
The former member of the boy band group Take That revealed that he had been diagnosed with scurvy after turning to an appetite-suppressant drug last year to lose weight, “I’d stop eating, and I wasn’t getting nutrients,” Williams said in an interview with Daily Mirror.
In 2018, Williams was in the news when he flipped off the audience during his World Cup performance.
“With body dysmorphia, when people say they’re worried about how you’re looking like, ‘I’ve achieved it,’ when people say, ‘We’re worried you’re too thin,’ that goes into my head as ‘Jackpot, I’ve reached the promised land.'”
Williams, 51, has long been vocal about his health, such as his troubles with depression, anxiety and agoraphobia. He said he did not expect the issues to return at a later stage of his life. He said that once he changed his diet, the issues began to go away.
“The most important thing is for yourself to be OK,” he said. “And not causing chaos in mine or anybody else’s life, like I used to back in the 90s.”
Scurvy is a disease caused by a lack of vitamin C in the body. It can be treated by supplementing a normal diet with vitamin C, either by ingestion of foods like oranges and lemons or by supplementary medicine. The disease was most common on the seas between the 16th and 18th centuries due to a lack of access to fruits and vegetables on large boats.
