Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is no longer refuting allegations that he smoked crack at some point last year, admitting that it likely happened during a “drunken stupor.”
Over the last several months, Ford has faced ample pressure to resign from his political post. Not only did he refuse to step down, he altogether evaded answering to the speculation. Ford ably managed to avoid facing the rumored video that captured him smoking the drug until last week. With the video confirmed to be in police hands, Ford decided to fess up, reported CBS News.
"Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine," Ford told reporters outside his office. "There have been times when I've been in a drunken stupor. That's why I want to see the tape. I want everyone in the city to see this tape. I don't even recall there being a tape or video. I want to see the state that I was in."
"Am I an addict? No,” Ford added. “Have I tried it, probably in one of my drunken stupors a year ago."
Back in May of this year, news of the infamous video was reported on by both Gawker and the Toronto Star – both of whom claim that reporters have seen the video. The individual who had allegedly taken the video was asking for six figures for rights to it. Ultimately, the owner of the video disappeared and the story quieted down as Ford continued on in his political office.
Now that the police have the tape, it will be kept from the public eye until it can be shown as evidence in court. Ford’s lawyer is denying police access to his client at this time.
