Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was hospitalized with stomach pains on Wednesday that have been determined to be caused by a tumor.

Ford has apparently been suffering from stomach pains for the last few months, and the pain increased in the 24 hours prior to his hospitalization. Upon examination, doctors determined that the politician has a tumor, but they’ve yet to reveal if the mass is malignant or benign.

"It is being investigated further and we need to determine exactly what type of tumor it is, and then we can decide on what type of treatment is required," Dr. Rueben Devlin, the president of Toronto’s Humber Regional Hospital, told CNN.

Ford’s brother Doug Ford has asked that the public give the family time to learn the full nature of the mayor’s health trouble. He also added, “Rob is in good spirits, and I just want to thank the well-wishers for all the calls that are coming in.”

Ford has achieved infamy over the last year following a crack cocaine scandal that came to a head this spring. Despite mounting evidence of a substance abuse problem, Ford remained in office. Partially relenting to pressure to address his problems, Ford checked himself into rehab, but returned to work in June, much to the chagrin of the city council.

Ford has been campaigning over the last few months, seeking reelection to his mayoral post. Earlier this week, the politician, who has had some trouble in the debates, received an endorsement from boxer Mike Tyson.
