Rob Bironas, former Tennessee Titans kicker, died Saturday night when he lost control of his SUV while driving home; he was 36 years old.
Bironas was reportedly only about a mile from his home in Nashville when his 2009 GMC Yukan Denali crashed at 11 p.m. In a statement, local police stated that Bironas had been “traveling at a high rate of speed” at the time of the crash, though there was no evidence of drug use or alcohol. The football player was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and pronounced dead.
Bironas’ death was confirmed on Twitter by his official Twitter account. In the Twitter statement, Bronas’ rep told grieving fans, “We appreciate your respect for the family’s privacy and your prayers at this time.”
Bironas was married to Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who took leave from his Fox NFL Sunday pregame show to be with his daughter.
Bironas was released from the Titans in March after nine years with the team, in which he became one of Titan’s all-time lead scorers – 1,032 points – and set an NFL record after “hitting a field goal from at least 40 yards in 10 consecutive games.”
“We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news from last night about Rob Bironas. Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Rachel, and his family during this very difficult time,” said the Titans in a statement.
