Actress Rita Wilson claimed that she had suffered “extreme side effects” after being prescribed chloroquine for her coronavirus treatment in an Australian hospital.
Chloroquine is a drug used for malaria, and it still has not been proven effective against COVID-19.
“My fever did break, but the chloroquine had such extreme side effects, I was completely nauseous, I had vertigo, and my muscles felt very weak,” Wilson told CBS on Tuesday. “I think people have to be very considerate about that drug.”
President Donald Trump advocated the drug’s effectiveness earlier this March, asserting that it could be “one of the biggest game-changers in the history of medicine.”
“I sure as hell think we ought to give it a try,” Trump said during a press conference in March.
Despite his passionate endorsement, public health experts, including White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, warned that there isn’t any solid evidence yet to prove the drug’s effectiveness.
Wilson and husband Tom Hanks were one of the first celebrities to reveal their diagnosis for COVID 19.
The couple is now fully recovered and back in the United States.
They also reportedly have donated their blood for the study to see if their antibodies can help a vaccine making for coronavirus.
