Ringo Starr Becomes Latest Singer To Boycott North Carolina Over Anti-LGBT Bill

Ringo Starr, who was scheduled to perform in Carey, North Carolina, in June, has canceled the show due to North Carolina’s anti-LGBT bill.

Starr announced on Facebook Monday that his concert at the Koka Booth Amphitheater outside of Raleigh would not go on as planned.

“I’m sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred. Spread peace and love,” Starr said in his statement, which was posted to Facebook. “How sad that they feel that this group of people cannot be defended.”

Starr has joined a growing list of performers who are taking a stand agains the HB2 bill in North Carolina by boycotting their own concerts. Among those who’ve already boycotted is Bruce Springsteen.

Taking a different approach to the discriminatory bill is Cyndi Lauper. Instead of boycotting, she has decided to use her scheduled concert to raise money for the efforts to do away with the law. All of the profits from her July 4 show will be donated to Equality North Carolina‘s campaign to have HB2 reversed.

Lauper, who says her concert will be “an entire day to build public support,” further stated that, “the pressure to repeal HB2 is building and it is beautiful.”
