Rihanna took to Twitter earlier this week to show support for Palestine, which is in the midst of a violent conflict with Israel.
On Tuesday, after celebrating Germany’s World Cup win in Brazil, Rihanna tweeted “#FreePalestine.” Not long after posting the controversial tweet, the singer deleted it. Despite nearly immediately removing the tweet from her page, it managed to get retweeted nearly 70,000 times.
According to an insider, Rihanna never intended to send out the tweet in the first place. “She deleted it because it was never meant to be tweeted,” the source told TMZ. “She didn't even realize it was a tweet until she started hearing from her fans."
Upon deleting the allegedly accidental tweet, Rihanna posted another one in regard to the ongoing conflict that called for peace in the region. “Let’s pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Is there any hope?” she wrote with a picture of a Palestinian boy and an Israeli boy with their arms wrapped around one another.
Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard also came under fire for tweeting, “#FreePalestine this week. The NBA player also deleted his post and followed it up with an apology, calling the tweet a “mistake.”
