A few years after Rihanna refused to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the NFL organization, she has accepted the offer to perform in one of the most-watched concerts every year.
2022’s Super Bowl Halftime Show had an impressive lineup of Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Bloge, along with special guests Anderson .Paak and 50 Cent. Rihanna will need some big guests or an incredible show to match the sheer variety on display here, but she’s probably up for the challenge.
This will be the first Halftime Show sponsored by Apple Music, which just replaced Pepsi as the benefactor of the concert. Next year’s Super Bowl will be taking place at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Taylor Swift was apparently one of the first artists who was asked to do this show, but she reportedly turned down the offer because she is in the process of re-recording her past albums.
Rihanna hasn’t released an album since ANTI in 2016 having been on an extended musical hiatus, though she has dropped occasional hints that a ninth album may be coming. A big platform like this is certainly a great way to build up hype for a new album.
The artist also just gave birth to a child with A$AP Rocky this year. She was recently named the world’s youngest self-made billionaire.
