Ricky Gervais is returning to host the 73rd Golden Globe Awards to deliver more biting humor for the masses watching at home.
Gervais, who hosted the awards show between 2010 and 2012, plans to address the most topical issues of the day, but to steer clear of making it all about politics. Donald Trump, real estate mogul-turned-reality TV star-turned-presidential candidate, however, will likely be on the end of a Gervais quip or two
“It’s all going to be topical. It’s all going to be justified,” Gervias told The Hollywood Reporter. “[But] I’m not going to go out there and do half an hour on Syria. I’m not a political comedian.”
.
“Trump might get a mention,” Gervais added. “He’s put his head in a basket. I think he’s volunteered for that, you know? You can joke about anyone’s willful behavior. I don’t really joke about things that people can’t help.”
Gervais also doesn’t do jokes that he can’t justify morally, jokes that, as he says, could have “collateral damage.” He explained, “I probably wouldn’t have a go at someone’s affair if their partner was still there — you know, it’s not their fault. That’s collateral damage for me.”
Looking back on his past hosting gigs, Gervais doesn’t believe he crossed a line, and remains surprised about the controversy that followed him thereafter.
“That stuff I did, I was shocked that people thought that was shocking,” Gervais said. “I thought, what have I said wrong? I didn’t say anything outrageous or libelous. I didn’t say anything against broadcasting rules. It was on network television, late afternoon, it couldn’t have been that bad.”
The Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 10 on NBC.
