Rick Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, sounded off on homosexuality again Wednesday, likening members of the LGBT community to alcoholics.

Rick Perry Likens Homosexuality To Alcoholism

Perry was making an appearance at the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco – home of The Castro – when he was prompted to share his views on homosexuality.

"Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that," Perry said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way."

Perry made the comparison between homosexuality and alcoholism after fielding a question about the “reparative therapy” for gays and lesbians that’s been put on the platform by the Texas Republican Party. Though he said he wasn’t sure if such therapy worked, he did suggest that sexual orientation is comparable to addiction.

Wednesday was not the first time that Perry connected homosexuality to alcoholism. He previously made a similar argument in his 2008 book On My Honor.Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink,” he wrote. “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”

Rick Perry is thought to be considering another run for the presidency in 2016.
