‘Rick And Morty’ Fan Pays $14K For 20-Year-Old Dipping Sauce Referenced On Show

Some TV shows inspire fans to dress up and attend conventions. Some inspire fans to plead with networks for season renewals. And others, well, maybe only one show can inspire a fan to spend $14,000 on a 20-year-old packet of McDonalds SzeChuan dipping sauce.

Ricky and Morty, the show in question, aired the first episode of it’s third season on April 1 and slipped in a seemingly harmless reference.

In the episode, Rick, who is a drunk mad-scientist, complains to his grandson about the discontinuation of McDonalds’ SzeChuan sauce.

“They created a new sauce for the McNuggets called the SzeChuan sauce. It’s delicious but they got rid of it and now it’s gone. The only place we can try it is in my memory,” cries Rick.

This line caused fans to search high and low for the discontinued sauce. Eventually, the sauce, along with a Wasabi sauce, went up for bid on Ebay. The bid closed on April 11 for a fan willing to pay $14,000.

The seller, who found the sauce in a “really old car” he bought went online to see if the sauce was worth anything after watching the episode.

“I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20 year old gnarly sauce gets this… I would prefer not to sell it to a collector,” the seller said on his post.

The sauce was made as a promotion for the movie Mulan and was discontinued once the promotion ended. But with the live-action remake of Mulan set for 2018, an unopened pack of of SzeChuan sauce may not cost $14,000 or, be 20-years-old for that matter, for much longer.

Although the first episode of the season aired on April 1, the rest of the season won’t begin until May. Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim and is created by Dan Harmon, the creator of Community who has previously had the support of some over-zealous fans.
