Court documents filed earlier this week in Washington, D.C., showed Politico writer Ryan Lizza deny his ex-fiancé’s accusations that he tried to blackmail her over her recent scandal.

Reports earlier this month disclosed that New York magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi had participated in a private personal relationship with former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after she interviewed him last November.

Kennedy and actress Cheryl Hines have been married since 2014. Nuzzi and her ex-fiancé Lizza had been engaged since 2022 but split after the news broke.

Nuzzi was placed on leave from New York magazine and apologized for the incident. She later alleged that Lizza had discovered her relationship with Kennedy and had harassed and blackmailed her with the information before he leaked it to the press.

The court documents see Lizza deny Nuzzi’s accusations and instead highlight that Nuzzi, “Had been cheating on me with a married man for almost a year.” Lizza insisted that he had never harassed or blackmailed Nuzzi and denounced the “defamatory lies” that he had threatened physical violence. He also denied ever having leaked Nuzzi’s private business.

Lizza continued in his filing that upon his discovery of tryst, Nuzzi had told him that her relationship with Kennedy was excessively unhealthy and that he wanted to “possess,” “control” and “impregnate” her. He further recalled that Nuzzi had described the relationship as “toxic,” “stupid,” “psychotic,” “unhealthy” “indefensible” and “crazy,” among other choice words. She also conceded that there was a “huge power disparity” between her and Kennedy.

Nuzzi supposedly begged Lizza to reconcile their marriage, but, although Lizza promised to help her break ties with Kennedy, he said, “I seriously doubted that it was possible for us to have a future together.”

A court date for Lizza and Nuzzi has been set for an undisclosed time next month.
