Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) said she wants to “defund” the state of New York state for convicting former President Donald Trump.
Greene proposed cutting the state off from federal funding in an attempt to punish residents after 12 jurors convicted Trump on May 30.
The proposal would cut off access to federal resources for education, housing, law enforcement and veterans’ benefits.
Greene commented during an interview with former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on the TV channel Real America’s Voice.
“And I think the American people have turned a corner after they watched that conviction come down in New York, to the point where it’s like, you know what? Screw New York,” the Georgia representative stated. “New York doesn’t deserve a damn penny. We shouldn’t fund them one single dime. Not a dime.”
“Because New York – you want to know – the state of New York – you know what they did, Steve,” she asked Bannon. “That state of New York released a monster – an illegal alien – that then traveled down to Georgia and murdered Laken Riley, yet they convicted President Trump of 34 fake felony charges.”
The illegal alien that Greene was referring to was Jose Ibarra, who pleaded not guilty to Riley’s murder
“Oh no, no, no,” she added. “The state of New York is the one that carries on and continues crimes and violence and corruption. They don’t deserve a penny from the federal government.”
Greene has a long history of controversial statements.
In May, Greene accused House Speaker Mike Johnson of being “owned by the Democrats” in an interview on Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo.
Her accusations came as a response to Johnson’s apparent unwillingness to “defund Jack Smith,” the special counsel who brought two indictments against Trump.
The House denied Greene’s effort to oust the House Speaker from his post. Only 10 Republicans and 32 Democrats backed her resolution. The chamber eventually voted 359-43-7 to keep him in his position in a bipartisan move.
In late May, Greene falsely argued in an X post on social media that the Biden Administration’s Justice Department attempted to “assassinate” Trump. The post displayed an increase in her use of radical language.
Her post appears to have begun with a statement Trump made on Truth Social, in which he argued without evidence that the Department of Justice “AUTHORIZED THE FBI TO USE DEADLY (LETHAL) FORCE” during the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago back in August 2022.”
