Police say that the controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-Georgia), has been involved in back-to-back “swatting” attacks. This term describes when people make false emergency calls with the aim of sending armed SWAT teams to their target’s homes.
It’s unclear when swatting first occurred, but it is often connected with other forms of online harassment like doxing or broadcasting the home location of a target.
It’s known to crop up occasionally in gaming communities, with high-profile streamers like Felix “xQc” Lengyel having to move because of near-daily police raids that were the result of an address leak.
The first call occurred around 1 a.m. EST on Wednesday and Rome, Georgia police said the caller mentioned: “a subject being shot multiple times,” but that officers realized the address provided was Greene’s residence after arriving.
A second call occurred around 3 a.m. EST which the police said came from what “appeared to be a suicide crisis line from an internet chat,” but they later determined that was false too.
Officers still appeared at Greene’s home after the second call, and they are now participating with Capitol Police in the investigation of the phony calls.
So far the authorities have not disclosed any suspects in the investigation.
Greene has had a career marred by racism and anti-LGBTQ statements.
