Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) has yet again sparked outrage with a controversial comment on social media, this time with comments about the recent death of Pope Francis.

Last week, nine hours following Francis’ passing, Greene posted to X, “Today there were major shifts in global leadership.”

Greene, who defines herself as a “Christian Nationalist,” continued with the assertion, “Evil is being defeated by the hand of God.”

Francis, 88, died at 7:35 a.m. on Easter Morning, April 21, due to a cerebral stroke. He was elected pope on March 13, 2013.

Greene’s post was quickly slammed for being insensitive, with internet users making comments such as “You’re a disgrace to America and the world,” and “Shame on you, lady. This is disgusting.”

Greene’s loathing of the Catholic Church’s previous leadership was no secret. In 2022 she wrote, “I was born into the church raised in it and I was married in the Church, with great sorrow, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, I stopped attending Catholic Mass when I became a mother because I realized that I could not trust the Church leadership to protect my children from pedophiles and that they harbored monsters even in their own ranks.”

Greene’s ex husband recently made headlines for harassing three Muslim women while they were praying.

Francis’ death kicked off the intense selection process for choosing a new head of the Catholic Church. Widely considered to be history’s most controversial pope in recent history, Francis was shunned by many conservatives in the religion, due to his rejection of traditional homophobic values in the Catholic Church. The most progressive pope yet, Francis distinguished himself from past leadership by serving as a voice for the poor and preaching environmental awareness.

A few commentators have defended Greene by pointing out that, however suspicious the timing of the post, Greene did not specifically mention Pope Francis, and there is no direct evidence that she was referring to his passing.

Greene has not made any comment clarifying a different intention in her message.
