Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) has alleged that a fellow member of Congress, whom she declined to name, committed an “assault” against her.
The allegation is reportedly directed at Rep. Richard McCormick (R-Georgia) and stems from an incident on the House floor in early November.
Before the encounter, Greene and McCormick had been engaged in a dispute over competing resolutions to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) for her comments after Hamas attacked Israel.
On the day of the incident, McCormick was engaged in an unproductive conversation with another House Republican colleague about the vote to censure Tlaib.
When he turned around, McCormick saw Greene and placed his hands on her shoulders, shook her and remarked that he could have an honest conversation with her, and implied that he couldn’t have one with the person he had turned away from.
McCormick, however, denies that the interaction was a physical attack and claims that he intended it to be a friendly gesture. He stated that he understands the heightened emotions that surround the censure vote, as Greene’s censure was tabled while his own passed.
McCormick said he intended to encourage Greene, but when he realized that she did not appreciate his comment, he immediately apologized and has not spoken to her since.
In a previous interview with CNN, Greene mentioned a “serious” incident that involved an undisclosed colleague and expressed her desire to speak with Speaker Mike Johnson about it.
When asked about the incident, Greene simply referred to it as “assault,” and emphasized that a man should not put his hands on a woman. She did not provide further details or specify any actions she may take against McCormick.
The outcome of Greene’s resolution to censure Tlaib was unsuccessful, with the measure defeated after nearly two dozen Republicans joined Democrats in the vote against it. McCormick’s resolution, which reprimanded Tlaib for the promotion of false narratives about Hamas’ attack on Israel and the call for the destruction of the state of Israel, passed a week later.
Greene was recently in the news when her new book got just one star from Amazon reviewers.
