Rep. Aaron Schock’s congressional office at the Rayburn House Office building stands out among the sea of beige, boasting bright red walls that look more fitted within the walls of Downton Abbey.
Schock’s controversial congressional digs, in addition to the bright red walls, is adored with gold wall sconces, arrangements of pheasant feathers, a crystal chandelier and a Federal-style bull’s-eye mirror. The dramatic styling is the work of interior decorator Annie Brahler
“I guess because he’s fresh-minded and forward-thinking, he’s not hung up on doing things the same way as everyone else,” Brahler told the Washington Post. “It’s gotten to where he’s comfortable with everything I do.”
Schock, who denies that he even watches Downton Abbey, has been subjected to some criticism for his lavish decorating. Some have even accused the Republican lawmaker of using taxpayer money to float his design project. Schock has maintained that he paid Brahler with a personal check when she decorated his office in Illinois, and plans to do the same thing this time around.
“She’s working on the office, so once it’s done, I’m sure I’ll get an invoice, and I’ll pay her,” he told ABC’s Jeff Zeleny.
As for criticism about the flamboyant look, Schock says that his constituents know what they’re getting with him – a young guy not stuck in the past and not afraid to brighten things up.
“I’ve never been an old crusty white guy – I’m different, I came to Congress at 27, I’m not going to — when I take a personal vacation, I don’t go sit on the beach, I go do active things,” he told ABC. “I’m also not going to live in a cave.”
Making an appropriate pop culture reference, Schock added, “As Taylor Swift said, ‘Haters are gonna hate.’”
