America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8 contestant Renee Alway appeared in court yesterday with a shaved head to face charges involving her most recent arrest in Palm Springs. In a far cry from the ANTM makeover Alway endured as a contestant on the popular reality show, Alway completely shaved her head in an attempt to show the court that she is trying to change, reports TMZ.
Alway was arrested on June 28 after Palm Springs Police found her camping out in an abandoned home with a gun. What resulted was a six-hour standoff of sorts, during which SWAT was called because Police suspected there was another armed person in the house. Alway has been charged with suspicion of burglary, fraud and possession of narcotics.
This most recent arrest comes less than a month after Alway was arrested for allegations of petty theft, fraud and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to TMZ. She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was out on bail when she was arrested again on June 28. Her bail is reportedly set at $150,000, and she is currently being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
Alway, who came in third on the Tyra Banks modeling competition show in 2007, is allegedly suffering from a substance abuse problem.
Alway’s mother told TMZ that the model’s addiction had become so severe, her family cut her off completely. “We stopped giving her money, which was feeding her drug problem,” Mrs. Alway said.
During her time on ANTM, the then twenty-year-old new wife and mother got into many fights with fellow contestants, but was, overall, a well-liked contestant.
Alway is not the only former America’s Next Top Model contestant to have suffered problems with addiction. In fact, fellow Cycle 8 contestant, Jael Strauss appeared on Dr. Phil last year when Dr. Phil helped her family stage an intervention for the 28-year-old meth addict.
Meanwhile, fans of the show wonder how Tyra, who is portrayed as a mentor on the show, fits into all of this.
“Tyra won’t do anything [for Jael],” Top Model winner Caridee English commented on an article Gawker posted about Jael’s addiction.
English, the Cycle 7 winner of ANTM, explained that, though the show gives aspiring models a fan base, it does little to launch them into the fashion industry, causing many to fail. She went so far as to call the transition “mentally… horrific.”
“When it boils down to it, there is just not a place for ANTM girls to fit post show. We just needed some guidance,” English wrote on Gawker.
