Rene Russo recently stopped by The Queen Latifah Show, where she revealed that she’s long battled bipolar disorder.
Russo was appearing on Queen Latifah's talk show to promote the upcoming thriller Nightcrawler alongside her costar Jake Gyllenhaal when the host asked them about a time in their lives when they felt they had to "push through" and eventually came out better for it. Without hesitation, Russo said, "bipolar medication."
While the audience applauded Russo for her bravery, both Latifah and Gyllenhaal looked suprised by the actress' confession. Russo explained, "My mom said my whole childhood … was stop and go. And then I stopped and was like, 'Whoa,' that was it for me."
"For all the people that are having trouble and maybe feel bad about taking medication, I didn't expect to say this, but that was really it for me," Russo elaborated. "It's okay — you will make it through. It's not easy but you will make it through."
Latifah, who knows people who suffer from bipolar disorder, thanked Russo for being so candid about her diagnosis and decision to take medication to help herself. She then asked the Thor actress if she could share what inspired her to take action.
"I literally crashed, hit a wall and couldn't get out of bed," Russo said. "I thought it was depression, but if you take antidepressants it speeds you up more. I'm kind of stop-and-go, I either crash or speed. I haven't shared this, but I think it's kind of important. I have some friends who don't want to go on medication, and they are suffering."
Russo then apologized to Gyllenhaal, acknowledging that her "push through" story might be a diffiuclt one to beat. The full episode of The Queen Latifah Show, which will feature the two talking about their movie together, airs Oct. 30.
Nightcrawler, which stars Gyllenhaal as an undercover crime journalist, hits theaters Oct. 31.
