The second episode of Glee's third season signaled the return of Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), Rachel's biological mom and the adopted mother of Beth, who is the love child of Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Puck. Did you catch all that? The episode was jam-packed with development in story arcs and stirred up emotion by pitting Glee members against each other — Kurt (Chris Colfer) vs. Brittany for student body president, Kurt vs. Blaine for the lead in the school musical, nice Quinn versus punk Quinn.
Co-directed by Emma Pillsbury, Coach Beiste and student aide Artie, West Side Story was announced as the school musical, which meant auditions were in order. Openly gay Kurt had his sights set on the lead male role of Tony, but the directors deemed him too effeminate to inhabit the alpha male role. "I need a Tony that excites my lady parts," Coach Beiste explained, which prompted Kurt toward a squirm-inducing Romeo and Juliet scene with Rachel (Lea Michele). Laughed offstage, Kurt needless to say did not get the part, though the kicker is that it may go to his boyfriend, the studlier Blaine (Darren Criss). Yikes!
The rest of the show consisted mostly of Brittany's pro-unicorn antics ("someone who knows they're magical and isn't afraid to show it"), then lots of baby drama surrounding Quinn, Puck, Rachel and Shelby. Oh, and there's another show choir at McKinley High, headed up by Shelby. Season one flashbacks anybody?
