RECAP: Downton Abbey's Lady Sybil Dies In Childbirth

Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay has played her last role as Lady Sybil on the PBS Masterpiece Classics British series, as her character died in childbirth on Sunday night's episode, leaving hubby Tom Branson to take care of their newborn daughter without her.

Violet spoke the tragic words to her family after Sybil met her fateful end on the episode. "Our darling Sybil has died during childbirth, like too many women before her." Cora, meanwhile, personally blamed Robert for trusting the eminent obstetrician Sir Philip Tapsell, who determined that Sybil should not go to a hospital despite her difficult labor. "Maybe she just has thick ankles," he explained of Sybil's swelling. "Lots of women do." For some reason, this comment didn't convince the well-meaning Lord Grantham or Dr. Clarkson that Sybil would be better off in different hands.

Perhaps Mrs. Hughes said it best when she told Thomas, "The sweetest spirit under this roof is gone" after Sybil's death. In the meantime, Sir Philip also gave his not-so-expert advice on Matthew and Mary's conception issue (a problem for Matthew; not so much for Mary): "Anxiety is an enemy to pregnancy," he told newlywed Matthew, only to be barged in upon by Mary, who shot daggers in their general direction.
