After over 60 million votes, country twang diva Skylar Laine, 20, found out that she finished in fifth place on what has proven to be a highly competitive season of American Idol. Laine, who performed CCR's "Fortunate Son" and Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," had been given a huge thumbs-up from judge Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday. "You're winning over the hearts of America as we speak," Lopez told her.
Laine was in the bottom two with Hollie Cavanagh, 20, whose little-engine-that-could determination has propelled her to rave reviews from the judges and — now — the Top 4. Judge Steven Tyler, before Laine's name was called as the one going home, gave a heartfelt goodbye. "At first, we tried to understand you guys and name it. But now, we’re all experiencing and feeling it… Thank you for letting us feel your music," Tyler said. Lopez was in tears.
Thursday's results show episode featured two performances by Coldplay and one by former Idol winner Carrie Underwood, who expressed disappointment that fellow country girl Laine would be leaving the competition. "Of course I loved seeing Skylar up there representing country music," Underwood told Zap2it. "It's sad to see her not on the show anymore."
With Laine out of the running, that leaves Cavanagh, Phil Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet.
