Rebel Wilson testified today that a series of Australian tabloid magazine articles were published to attack her, and that they damaged her career.
The actress is suing publisher Bauer Media for defamation over several 2015 articles, claiming that they led to some of her acting contracts being terminated. The articles said that Wilson had lied about her name, age and Australian upbringing.
Wilson cried as she testified before the Supreme Court of Victoria, rejecting the defendant’s claims that the articles were light-hearted and had no serious impact. “These articles were a deliberate malicious take-down of me,” the actress said. “It’s not lucrative. The reason why I’m here today is to stand up for myself and to stand up for my family, who’ve been harassed.”
Wilson is known for her work in Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect. She apparently has only had two roles since the articles were published two years ago, one in Absolutely Fabulous, the other a stage role in London. Wilson’s lawyer Dr. Matthew Collins said, following the publications, the actress was fired from two films – Trolls and Kung Fu Panda 3.
He told the six-woman jury that Bauer Media “tore down an Australian star to sell magazines… She thought she had never been hit with such nastiness. It should have been the high point of her career,” he continued. “She should have been going from meeting to meeting to discuss future roles. In fact, the phone stopped ringing.”
