Real Madrid, led by star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, brought down Barcelona with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday. The match, played at Barcelona’s Camp Nou, was the sixth of the series. The final tally leaves a 4-2 advantage for the winning team.
Ronaldo led his Real Madrid side with two goals on the night. Teammate Raphael Varane added to Ronaldo’s scores with a header off of a late corner kick. By the time Barcelona’s Jordi Alba netted one for his losing team, the game was already out of reach. Throughout the night, Barcelona’s defense led by Gerard Pique performed poorly, and though the offense maintained possession, they failed to create dangerous opportunities on goal. Real Madrid will go on to face either Atletico Madrid or Sevilla in the Copa Del Rey final.
Although Real Madrid bested rival Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey, the standings in the league paint a different picture. Barcelona currently holds first place in La Liga, leading second place Atletico Madrid by 12 points and third place Real Madrid by 16 points. On Saturday, first place Barcelona and third place Real Madrid will face off yet again in a league match that’s Barcelona’s to lose.
