Parks and Recreation comedian Rashida Jones, 36, the daughter of music mogul Quincy Jones with actress Peggy Lipton, is retracting some comments she made about actor John Travolta earlier this month while promoting her new movie, Celeste and Jesse Forever, which also stars Andy Samberg, Elijah Wood and Emma Roberts.
The trouble came when Jones started talking in an interview about R&B singer Frank Ocean, who recently surprised fans and colleagues when he publically revealed that he'd had a former relationship with another man. Other celebrities applauded Ocean's honesty, and around the same time, CNN reporter Anderson Cooper also revealed he was gay.
"A movie star," Jones said, of who should come out next. "Like John Travolta? Come out! Come on. How many masseurs have to come forward? Let's do this," she joked to the music website, SpinningPlatters.com. Jones was referring to the April sexual assault accusations levied against Travolta by two massage therapists in Los Angeles — allegations that were later withdrawn in one case, and dismissed in the other.
Jones recently thought better about her comments and took to Twitter on Tuesday to apologize. "Made a thoughtless comment about John Travolta. I sincerely apologize. Nobody's personal life is my business," she wrote.
Celeste and Jesse Forever, for which Jones also wrote the screenplay with The Sopranos actor Will McCormack, hits theaters on August 24.
