At his Bronx rally on Thursday, former President Donald Trump invited rappers Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow to the stage. The rappers were among other guests invited by Trump to show support for his presidential bid. Trump previously vowed to tighten crime laws and criminal punishments, especially after the shooting of New York City police officer Jonathan Diller.
However, the matter of Sheff G’s and Sleepy Hallow’s murder charges was not addressed. On stage, Trump complimented the rappers’ attire, including their bedazzled teeth.
“I got to get my teeth like that. I want that to happen to me,” Trump said in front of the crowd.
On stage, Sheff G, whose real name is Michael Williams, and Sleepy Hallow, whose real name is Tegan Chambers, expressed their support for Trump. The rappers greeted Trump casually, calling him “my man” before approaching the microphone.
“One thing I want to say: They are always going to whisper your accomplishments and shout your failures. Trump is going to shout the wins for all of us,” Williams stated.
In 2023, Williams and Chambers were indicted for gang conspiracy charges with 30 other gang members. Williams was previously serving a sentence in a New York state prison for gun possession charges. Prosecutors also accused Williams of using his money to finance shootings against rival gang members. Both Williams and Chambers were released on bail. Williams paid his $1.5 million cash bail on the day it was set.
The pair are due back in court to face the charges.
Political experts claim Trump’s invitation to Williams and Chambers was an attempt to appeal to black voters, considering New York is mainly Democratic. In February, Trump released his “Never Surrender High-Tops” at the Philadelphia Sneaker Convention. Priced at $400, Trump was accused of trying to appeal to a younger audience with his new merchandise.
In the same month, Trump also claimed his mugshot appealed to black voters “because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against.” Trump was criticized for stereotyping the black community and trying to correlate crime to black voters.
