Offset was driving with his bodyguard when police officers stopped him for an improper lane change near Atlanta, Georgia. The officers smelled marijuana and decided to search the car. In their search, they found three handguns, less than an ounce of marijuana and $107,000 in cash according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The 26-year-old rapper and his bodyguard were both arrested. The charges included improper lane changing, marijuana possession and possession of firearms.

Offset was released on Saturday morning with a $17,000 bail. His wife, Cardi B, posted a picture of the two of them on her Instagram story and titled it “Home.” The couple married last year and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Kulture Kiari, earlier this month. Offset’s lawyer, Drew Findling, told People that his client was concerned about his wife and baby during the arrest and that “his new baby is his top priority as well as his other children.” Offset thanked Findling in an Instagram post on Saturday, July 21, 2018.

Findling said that his client was racially profiled and that police used an improper lane change as an excuse to pull the rapper over. Findling told TMZ, “It’s a common theme. We’re talking about a young African-American man driving a shiny, beautiful luxury car and clad in designer clothes and watches and jewelry.” Findling also said that rappers become targets for law enforcement who assume the music genre is connected to real life illegal activity and “that is a sad statement.” The attorney said that Offset broke no laws as the firearms belonged to his bodyguard who is licensed to carry them.
