Rage Against The Machine has finally begun their first tour in over a decade and took time during their concert to respond to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. RATM and its members are known to hold anti-authoritarian views and have criticized the U.S. government in and out of their music many times in the past.
The band’s bold message, “ABORT THE SUPREME COURT,” came in the form of text that appeared on video screens behind the band members. Lead singer Zack De La Rocha didn’t make any extra statements during the concert but screamed “freedom!” repeatedly times while the messages played.
“Forced birth in a country that is the only wealthy country in the world without any guaranteed paid parental leave at the national level,” the first screen read as the band continues to play a driving melody.
“Forced birth in a country where black birth-givers experience maternal mortality two to three times higher than that of white birth-givers,” the next screen read. The final screen was just as gut-wrenching and said, “Forced birth in a country where gun violence is the number one cause of death among children and teenagers.”
As the music crescendoed, the text “ABORT THE SUPREME COURT” finally appeared in all caps to cheering from the fans in the crowd.
The band wasn’t paying lip service to their pro-choice fans, either. This message would have been shallow without any other action, but the band also announced in late June that they donated $475,000 to abortion rights groups in Illinois and Wisconsin in the wake of the Roe v. Wade reversal.
